I purchased travel books and such and could not pass up a fabulous pictorial on Italy. I decided to practice from this book on the architectural challenges and colors etc, I live in rural NE and do not have such urban challenges.
This is my first attempt at a gorgeous Venice canal scene - not bad for a first attempt if I do say so myself - done in moleskine with pencil then ink (coward that I am) then wc added in layers as the paper would allow - (non WC paper and quite un-absorbent!)

You did a beautiful job on this!! WOEE!! How exciting to be planning a trip like this. I so look forward to seeing your sketchbook when you get back!!!!
Dreaming? Oh you will think it heaven. I was in Europe last summer and sketched my way through it. That in itself was an adventure! http//:martas-travelsketchbook.blogspot.com/
Your sketch is lovely, I thought I was in Venice again! I look forward to YOUR adventure sketches. I might be going again in October of this year with my husband and daughter! They can entertain each other while I sketch! marta
This is really nice, Sandy - what a good idea to practice now. When you se the real thing you'll know where to start. You're going to have such a wonderful time!
Oh I'm so jealous! Good for you for making it happen. Your sketch is divine!
(I also have trouble with the moleskine paper so I rebind mine with watercolor paper. I posted about that recently on my sketchblog).
This is a WONDERFUL Venice sketch! You definitely captured the colors, architectural details, and water reflections. What an interesting way to prepare for your visit. Before I first visited Venice I read 7 mysteries set in the city. You should also look for the exhibition book Sargent's Venice. His watercolors will really inspire you.
Wonderful sketch! And good for you for making plans to making dreams come true!
Lovely paint sketch - what good preparation for a trip there.
