EDM 165 Home
Sketching one's home is a lot like doing a self portrait, all too familiar with the subject and unable to view simplistically. This was a difficult subject for me , no matter how I tried I could not stop the over clutter and overwork. But here is our home.
This was our starter house in 1972, smallish for the area and lots of finish work to do ourselves. Now 36 years later we have added on in every direction- including up. All three children grew up here and now the grandkids visit. Too much space for the two of us, but we love the neighborhood and proximity to the shore. There is little greenery right now but I added some to depict spring.
The house is Long, so I tried this sketch (kind of a blob) and inked in the huge oaks that would have otherwise blocked the view. The best thing we ever added was the front porch!
I Love architectural sketches but obviously need to work on this skill quite a bit!

Sandy!! I think this is SUPERB!!!! What a glorious home and yard!! AND I could spend forever on your porch!! SUPER SUPER JOB!
You are way too hard on yourself! This is charming and I can FEEL how much of your heart is in your home. We got two for the price of one! YAY! Lisa
I think it looks lovely and it looks like a very happy home :)
I like the top sketch in particular. There is a nice feeling of depth to it. I think you are correct in saying that sketching your own home is like a self portrait, the need is there to make it really "right" and to convey the feeling you have for the place.
Funny....about the invisible oaks...i left them out of mine too...lovely house! And a very nice job of rendering it too!
I love bothsketches. The second looks like prelim to a Portrait to be done. The evaluation is now. I have to find a certain blog for you. A very good artist, went through the steps for illustrating architecture. I think you would enjoy her opinion. I have to look up the . Com Later.

I think it's great, Sandy. It just has a "homey" feeling to it. It's kind of sad feeling when your family shrinks down to too small for your house...
I like them! I like how you made he trees transparent, including and excluding them at the same time, in the second drawing.
Ooooh Sandy, Your home 'portrait' oozes WELCOME! How very lovely it is. Clare
What a wondeful place to live, Sandy! I really like yor drawings - especially the top one which is excellent. I love the way you stayed in the same house and kept adding on - it's truly yours now!
Sandy, it looks beautiful! You did a great job on painting it and the memories mean even more.
I've so enjoyed seeing everyone's home with this challenge! Your looks so welcome and inviting. Don't be surprised if I come knocking someday!
It is so nice to see your house Sandy...it is beautiful, and you did such a great job on drawing it...both sketches!
