EDM #144 Square

Ok one more from Rome. The challenge this week was "square" and I simply could not find anything inspiring - then I remembered my picture of the Pantheon ceiling - the 8' opening at the center and the square paneling encircling the dome. There was a definite rosy glow as the sun beamed in. So here it is, my exhibit for "Square". Pencil, and watercolor in Winsor and Newton sketchbook.

I am standing under Rome's greatest colum once again. My Amy said that is what the colum of light shinning through the oculus is called. As for squares..did you notice the small one cut into the base of the dome? It is said that is where Brunelleschi cut into the pantheon's dome to examine the materials used as he was working on his project: the Duomo in Florence. Don't you just get shivers when you realized you too have been there? I am enjoying all of your posts so much!!! Maybe someday we will do europe together!!!

This is a beautifully imposing rendering of one of the most important buildings of western civilization. You convey the sense of the dome's receding, vertical grandeur very well.

As others have said, love that comp. This would look great as a full-size (big) painting. Beautiful!
